Meet The Filmmaker

We asked our filmmakers some questions about them and their work. For further questions, join us at the designated post-screening Q+A!

Miguel Alvarez:

1. What is your connection to the South?

I was born and raised in Texas and lived here all my life. It’s influenced all my work as well as my proximity to Mexico.

2. Where did you get your inspiration for this work?

The songs of Townes Van Zandt were a major influence on Atlantic City as well the city of San Antonio itself. There’s a unique character to it and the people who wander in and out of it.

3. How did you start making films?

I was a lonely mechanical engineer until I took a night time class in filmmaking 17 years ago. I really enjoyed the process and so took another class a couple of months later. After that, I was hooked!

4. Did anything interesting or funny happen on set during the shooting?

It’s really, really difficult to find a working train yard to shoot in. I think we called every one in Texas, as well as all the train museums. We ended up finding one in Temple to shoot in at the last possible moment but only because the lady who ran the train yard thought I looked like her favorite TV character ever – Sayid from Lost.

5. What do you look forward to the most during Indie Grits?

I can’t wait to meet all of you!

6. Why should someone see your film?

Go see Atlantic City! It’s about family and friendship and all the hardship that comes with it.
