Fruit Don’t Fall Far

Friday, April 13 at 8:10 PM

Feature Block: Rukus
Odile Postic | Richmond, VA | 2 min
Genre: Animation

An oafish gardener sprouts something peculiar in his backyard, inspiring his pet bird–trapped in a cage–to take flight. Inspired by the life and legacy of Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven, a Dada artist forced to the margins of history in spite of her dramatic creative achievements.

We asked our filmmakers some questions about them and their work. For further questions, join us at the designated post-screening Q+A!

Odile Postic:

1. What is your connection to the South?

I was born in Florida and spent the majority of my childhood right here in Columbia so I’ve always considered it my home. I go to school in Richmond, Virginia so even with that transition I wasn’t able to shake it!

2. Where did you get your inspiration for this work?

For Fruit Don’t Fall Far I was inspired by the sound poetry of Elsa Von Freytag and the name she made for herself as a Dadaist. For me, Elsa represents the underrepresented narrative of female artist’s enormous influence on the evolution of post modernist art. The title is actually taken from one of her poems she wrote about growing up in Germany. An overall question that I wanted to address is the vital role women have in society and the beauty and creativity that bursts from feminine energy.

3. How did you start making films?

I started making “films” (I guess I would call them films) with my friends when I was twelve. For Christmas my best friend and I both got Flip camcorders. I had this obsession with Kristen Wiig and SNL and I believe that’s what initially motivated me. We started making a lot of fake reality shows and fake commercials and uploading them on youtube and facebook. The TLC channel was the source of a lot of our inspiration back then. It was a lot of fun and basically sealed the deal that I wanted to make videos for the rest of my life. If anyone is ever curious, I have them buried away somewhere and they’re actually pretty funny!

4. Did anything interesting or funny happen on set during the shooting?

At first when I was finishing up the animation for Fruit Don’t Fall Far, I didn’t think I would finish the coloring on time. I was doing every scene by myself and my hands were literally about to shatter into a million pieces. I decided to reach out on instagram and see if anyone felt like helping. The response was overwhelmingly positive and we ended up knocking out all of the frames in one afternoon over pizza and starbursts. The energy in that room could’ve blown the roof off. It was definitely a good feeling to know that I have such a strong support system of fellow artists and friends.

5. What do you look forward to the most during Indie Grits?

I look forward to seeing all the other films showing for Indie Grits this year and just soaking up all the creative energy in my hometown!

6. Why should someone see your film?

Someone should see my films because that’s the reason why I make them!! My favorite part of making any kind of art is letting other people see it! I really hope that if people make it out to see my films they will let me know what they thought. If you laugh about it or a part sticks with you after seeing it then my work here is done.
