Meet The Filmmaker

We asked our filmmakers some questions about them and their work. For further questions, join us at the designated post-screening Q+A!

Betty Benns:

I suppose my first interaction with film started with me in front of the camera, the star of my family 8mm home movies.  My mom recorded these often mundane moments during birthdays and holidays, voicing the soundtrack of our lives. Only later did I sense the evocative nature of film in the hands of a creator asserting “I am here. This is who I am today.”  This expression of identity, often a struggle, is always present for me whether it be as a woman, an Asian American, or a southerner.

I believe that it’s incredibly important for everyone to see themselves in the world around them, as we all reflect and shape the way we live.  It seems that film can help accomplish this remaking of the world when the means of production and delivery are in the hands of the many, rather than the few.  I’m so grateful for venues and festivals such as Indie Grits that create local and diverse opportunities.

My inspiration for this film stemmed from the real life events happening around me and in this community.  The Rock Roulette event hosted by Girls Rock Columbia provided a uniquely supportive environment for participants to project their voices, and I’m honored to share their stories on the screen.
