Meet The Filmmaker

We asked our filmmakers some questions about them and their work. For further questions, join us at the designated post-screening Q+A!

Nellie Kluz:

1. What is your connection to the South?

I’m from NY (and other places, having moved a few times growing up) but I’ve spent time in various Southern states traveling and visiting friends etc. Driving back and forth from Chicago to Arkansas doing this film created a deeper connection for me.

2. Where did you get your inspiration for this work?

I was on a road trip researching for a different project when I happened across the set where they do the play – it’s a popular attraction in the area. I had wanted to make a film about a religious pageant for a long time – I love repetitive rituals – so when I saw the location I loved it and knew I wanted to make a film there.

3. How did you start making films?

I figured out that I wanted to make movies when I was a teenager, but I was interested in all different kinds of things and I figured out that I was less interested in being on sets than I was in doing research and spending time filming with people – I was drawn to documentary filmmaking as a practice that allows me to insert myself into situations I don’t otherwise have a reason to be in.

4. Did anything interesting or funny happen on set during the shooting?

Lots of things! The people at the Passion Play where I filmed invited me to play volleyball with them one Friday night while I was filming, so I went and did that – I’m terrible at volleyball, 5-year olds kids were beating me but everyone was being really sweet about it. I was filming solo and camping out while filming, so that led to a lot of moments that were fun but also sometimes a little harrowing. Raccoons ate my stuff a couple times and I was really worried about wild boars.

5. What do you look forward to the most during Indie Grits?

Seeing other people’s work and visiting Columbia!

6. Why should someone see your film?

I hope it’s a fun watch. There’s a lot of visually interesting stuff happening and I think that a viewer gets to hear people express themselves in a way that’s fairly personal and eloquent. Spending time at this play with these people was very thought-provoking for me and I think it shows in the film.
