Meet The Filmmakers

We asked our filmmakers some questions about them and their work. For further questions, join us at the designated post-screening Q+A!

Serene Bacigalupi & Jason Rhein:

1. What is your connection to the South?

In 2015, our Co-Creator, Serene Bacigalupi moved to New Orleans from New York City to explore puppetry. In a lucky twist of fate, she quickly met renowned puppet designer Jacques Duffourc, and began a project to bring her monster paintings to life through puppetry and film. This collaborative work wouldn’t have been possible without the dedicated artists we have been able to find in New Orleans; we are lucky to be based in such a creative Southern city!

2. Where did you get your inspiration for this work?

The characters and concepts already existed in the world of Leroy’s Place; we wanted the challenge of exploring them in different mediums. The excitement of seeing the characters some to life, alongside a belief in creative children’s programming is at the core of this project. We are convinced that exposing kids to hand-drawn sets, creative uses of recycled materials, and visible mechanics will inspire important creativity and imagination. We want to introduce our handmade monsters to the world as an analogue alternative to the highly digitized trend in modern storytelling (while making people laugh).

3. How did you start making films?

We started our project by doing live puppet shows, but quickly realized that we wanted to reach a larger audience. While the live element is still an exciting part of our work, we are excited to continue to explore the potential of the project through film.

4. Did anything interesting or funny happen on set during the shooting?

Our film is based on an existing painting, called “You Can’t Play With Us.” The painting was created by taking an old paint-by-numbers painting and adding unicorns and a dinosaur directly to it using pen and paint-pen. When we built our set, we actually grid it out to match the painting, and numbered each square to be painted just like an actual paint-by-numbers. We were lucky to have some kids from a local youth organization come help fill in the set!

During the filming, we created a Marshmallow avalanche. It took 13 people hidden in the set to pull it off. We shot the scene 3 times, and each time we had to clean up every single piece of marshmallow and snow foam off the set. We used actual marshmallows, so the whole thing was a real sticky mess!

5. What do you look forward to the most during Indie Grits?

Besides being excited to meet other filmmakers and see the amazing films they’ve made, we are thrilled that Indie Grits has a puppetry slam! We hope to have a short piece to perform!

6. Why should someone see your film?

We are the only film, to our knowledge, that has unicorns made out dirty socks in it.
