About the Program

Lower Richland StoryLab is an in-school media program that focuses on the issues faced by rural communities in and around Hopkins, South Carolina in the 21st Century. With the instruction of artist-in-residence and Lower Richland native, Mahkia Greene, over 60 Lower Richland High school students are creating new works of media art that examine their communities past, tell its stories, challenge misconceptions, and present a vision of the future of lower Richland County.

About the Instructor

Mahkia Greene is a Columbia based filmmaker and media artist. Her love for film emerged at a young age, when she began shooting and editing home movies and short films with family and friends. Mahkia graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Media Arts from the University of South Carolina in 2016. Since then she has done her best to incorporate topics of identity, place, and experience into her artwork.

Some of her notable achievements include documenting a photovoice project for the Women’s Rights Empowerment Network (WREN)-a regionally recognized Women’s Rights Organization and guest facilitating a workshop on media messaging at the 2018 Obama Foundation Summit.

Currently Mahkia manages media education for Indie Grits Labs where she teaches media- based workshops, field trips, and afterschool programs.
