The 14th Annual Indie Grits Film Fest will be presented as a free live stream eight-day pop-up event March 28 – April 5, 2020! In response to the COVID-19 health concerns, the Columbia Film Society cancelled the Indie Grits Film Fest and closed the Nickelodeon Theatre. In the spirit of celebrating the art of our filmmaking community, Indie Grits will present select, participating short and feature films in competition entirely online via one-time-only live streams.
In this time of heightened precaution, and following the new guidelines issued by the CDC on Sunday, the Nickelodeon Theatre and Indie Grits Labs have chosen to close until further notice. This means the theater will not show films that were scheduled (including special screenings and series). All programming offered by Indie Grits Labs are suspended. We feel that these measures are in the best interest of our community and keeping our patrons safe.
If you have already purchased tickets to an upcoming film screening at the Nickelodeon or for the Indie Grits Festival, your tickets will be automatically refunded. All passes for the Indie Grits festival will also be refunded. All events associated with the festival have been canceled.
As a non-profit, this decision was very difficult for us, and we anticipate some difficult financial constraints in the coming months. If you are able, we encourage you to continue renewing memberships and making donations, you are the lifeline of our organization.
We are monitoring the situation and will continue to respond in the interest of our staff, patrons and the community. Please check back at our websites for up-to-date information about closures. You will continue to receive our weekly emails. We appreciate your patience and your financial support as we manage these changes.
Thank you for your continued support and love of film!
Get ahead of schedule by purchasing a festival pass! With over 100 films, and a slew of art, music, and tech events around downtown Columbia this year, we are excited to share with you what we have in store for our fourteenth annual festival. Our official schedule drops March 01, 2020! $100 for Nickelodeon Theatre members and $150 for the general public. Festival passes grant you full access to the festival—film screenings, puppet slams, music, and more.
In 2019-2020 the Indie Grits Labs Fellowship program is focusing on current News & Media Literacy issues facing our local Southern communities through the “Real Fiction Project.” 2020 promises a reality in which false information travels faster and more abundantly than factual information. Truth finds itself sliding on an unstable spectrum, and conspiracy theories thrive in ever increasing “news deserts” in our local, Southern communities. Media artworks based on this theme will be revealed by the Fellowship during the 2020 Indie Grits Festival.
