Meet The Filmmaker

We asked our filmmakers some questions about them and their work. For further questions, join us at the designated post-screening Q+A!

Laura Iancu:

1. What is your connection to the South?

Even though I’m not a citizen, living by the mountains in Virginia is the closest I arrived to a feeling of home in the US.

2. Where did you get your inspiration for this work?

I was looking at center pivot irrigation sites on google earth and I wondered what they would look like mapped in 3D on environments that are human-sized. The leaves of the trees are crop circles, the bark is textured with images of pumpjacks and so on. From there I let the kick of the music take over.

3. How did you start making films?

I think this is a common story, kid gets camera, kid records everything, kid becomes good at it. I recorded my grandparents the most and when I became intelligent enough to understand my activity as a filmmaking practice that footage became a full length observational documentary. I think I started making films out of boredom and an intense desire to archive.

4. Did anything interesting or funny happen on set during the shooting?

I got an eye infection and it puffed up so I looked like a diseased gerbil for a few days.

5. What do you look forward to the most during Indie Grits?

Acquiring and preserving fresh impressions of the creative south.

6. Why should someone see your film?

Because I’m overripe with excitement for them to.
