Meet The Filmmakers

We asked our filmmakers some questions about them and their work. For further questions, join us at the designated post-screening Q+A!

Will Carington, Courtney Bush, and Jake Goicoechea:

1. What is your connection to the South?

Though we all met as students at NYU, Courtney is originally from Gulfport, Mississippi and Will is from San Antonio, Texas. Incidentally, Will’s mom (whose voice is featured in the film) is also from Mississippi. Jake’s from Idaho, which isn’t the South, but he’s our friend!

2. Where did you get your inspiration for this work?

It’s based on a real experience that Courtney had while visiting Mississippi for Christmas. Her mom, Kim, went out to pick up a gift card, didn’t answer her phone for a few hours, and the rest is history.

3. How did you start making films?

All of us have always been interested in writing, and after graduating college we decided to write and film a web series together with the help of our friend Julian Kapadia, who’s a cinematographer (and also shot this film). That led to making other comedy video projects, and eventually a couple of short films, including this one.

4. Did anything interesting or funny happen on set during the shooting?

As a thank you to our cast and crew, we made turkey tacos that ended up being really bad. Like, completely flavorless and we had SO many of them. Everyone was very understanding though.

5. What do you look forward to the most during Indie Grits?

We’re looking forward to seeing other people’s films, meeting other filmmakers, and seeing what snacks and drinks are in the filmmaker lounge.

6. Why should someone see your film?

Because it’s a Southern Gothic Christmas suspense comedy with an all-female ensemble cast!
